The Poison of Political Correctness

Psalm 140

Intro: Tonight, I want to take these verses – mainly verse number 3 – and deal with the subject of “The Poison of Political Correctness.

The world we live in is filled with daily references to POLITICALLY CORRECT.

It is also called the “PC Culture.”

For us older Christians, it may just be an annoying term to describe pretty much the opposite of how we feel about pretty much everything.

But many of our younger generation may feel that we are the ones that are out of date; out of touch; ignorant.

I need to preach this for them – if not for every one of us!

Merriam-Webster Definition of POLITICALLY CORRECT: conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities should be eliminated

EXAMPLES OF THE POISON OF POLITICIAL CORRECTNESS

It is politically incorrect to say there are only 2 genders.

It is politically incorrect to not accept same-sex marriage.

It is politically incorrect to not support cross-dressers reading to 4 year-olds at the library.

It is politically incorrect to stand for the rights of the unborn.

It is politically incorrect to believe that all lives matter – every – single – one!

It is politically incorrect to be a patriotic, flag waving American who loves their country.

It is politically incorrect to believe in the rule of law; the Constitution; the Bill of Rights.

It is politically incorrect to support law enforcement.

It is politically incorrect to think it is ridiculous and dangerous to defund the police.

It is politically incorrect to denounce anarchy and lawlessness and mob rule in the streets.

It is politically incorrect to object when they tell you that you don’t need guns because you have police, and then they dismantle the police departments.

It is politically incorrect to support criminals going to prison.

It is politically incorrect to reject the idea that the government has the right to indoctrinate your kids.

It is politically incorrect to believe people that could earn a living shouldn’t live off of the taxpayers.

It is politically incorrect to want safe and secure borders.

It is politically incorrect to deny global warming.

It is politically incorrect to question the health experts that keep getting it horribly wrong about this virus.

It is politically incorrect to think for yourself, point out hypocrisy and reject group think.

But it doesn’t stop there.

It is politically incorrect to believe that Jesus is the Only Way to Heaven.

It is politically incorrect to believe in a literal hell and a literal heaven; a literal God and a literal devil.

It is politically incorrect to believe God’s Word is the Final Authority for all matters of faith and practice.

It is politically incorrect to believe that the church is authorized to witness and win the unsaved.

It is politically incorrect to send missionaries to foreign countries to convert them from idolatry.

It is politically incorrect to believe in disciplining and training your children.

And the list goes on and on and on…

This chasm; the divide between the people of God and the unbelievers has always existed; it is nothing new.

There have always been enemies of God and God’s people that fought truth and right and godliness.

Notice in Psalm 140, David makes multiple references to several key elements of these evil people.

               A. Their Wickedness

  • Vs. 1 Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;
  • Vs. 2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
  • Vs. 4  Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
  • Vs. 8 Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.
  • Vs. 11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

It is important that we understand the difference in having a different opinion about something and being wicked.

It is one thing to see something differently or have a different outlook. It is another thing when your opinion, your agenda, your ideology is evil; wicked; ungodly.

Somethings we can agree to disagree about; I’m OK with that.

We don’t have to agree on sports teams; food; restaurants, vacation spots, etc.

But when my or your opinion is in direct violation of God’s word, that is a different story.

These men were not just misinformed – they were evil.

They were not just confused – they were wicked.

They were not simply unlearned – they were wicked!

               B. Their Warring

  • Vs. 1 Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;
  • Vs. 2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
  • Vs. 4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

These people are not passive; they are aggressive.

They are not just promoting an ideology; they are pushing an invasion.

They are not just trying to outnumber us; they want to overthrow us. (SEE vs. 4 – this is their purpose)

Their agenda according to verse 8 is to exalt themselves. Same agenda as Lucifer.

  • Isaiah 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

               C. Their Words

  • Vs. 3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.
  • Vs. 9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
  • Vs. 11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

               D. Their Wiles

  • Vs. 5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
  • Vs. 8 Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; [lest] they exalt themselves. Selah.

David pointed out their snares, cords, net, gins and wicked devices. (GIN – baited trap)

David refers to the evil and violent men of his day as poisonous serpents and adders. (see verse 3)

Satan is referred to in Genesis 3:1 as a subtle serpent.

He is called “that old serpent” in Revelation 20:2.

We know that Satan is the “prince and the power of the air” and the “god of this world.”

It stands to reason that Satan’s mode of operation is to deceive, to lie, and that his words are poison.

His followers; the wicked and evil men are also deceivers and their words are poison.

Psalm 58

  • 2 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.
  • 3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.
  • 4 Their poison [is] like the poison of a serpent: [they are] like the deaf adder [that] stoppeth her ear;

The ideology and the influence of the PC crowd is poisonous.

It is deadly; it is detrimental; it is destructive.

It has poisoned several generations of young people.

It has poisoned the colleges and halls of higher learning.

It has poisoned untold thousands of churches.

I want to give you three results of the POISON OF POLITICAL CORRECTNESS.

I. It Chokes the Word of God

Mark 4

  • 15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
  • 16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
  • 17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.
  • 18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
  • 19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

The PC culture is in direct violation of Scripture.

It is poisonous in that once a person has been exposed to the TRUTH, they then in a battle for their mind, their heart, their soul and their will.

Notice in verse 17 – “when affliction or persecution ariseth FOR THE WORD’S SAKE, they are offended!”

Notice verse 19 – “the cares of this world…and the lusts of other things entering in CHOKE THE WORD.”

II. It Cramps the People of God

NOTE: Most if not all of God’s men in the Bible were without a doubt POLITICALLY INCORRECT!

  • Joseph stood in front of Pharaoh and told him a 7-year famine was coming.
  • Moses stood up against Pharaoh and his entire court.
  • Elijah confronted Ahab and Jezebel and their idolatrous, wicked lifestyle.
  • Nathan condemned David for his sin with Bathsheba.
  • Many of the prophets were outspoken to the political leaders of their day. Jeremiah, Michaiah,
  • Daniel wouldn’t eat the king’s meat; wouldn’t obey the kings law. Told Belshazzar he would die (Dan. 5:22-28)
  • John the Baptist told Herod it was unlawful for him to have his brother’s wife.
  • Paul stood before multiple kings and dignitaries and told them they were lost.
  • Jesus – the most politically incorrect preacher of all looked the religious, political leaders of his day in their eyes and called them snakes, vipers,

A true man of God will preach the truth – whether it is politically correct or not.

But the pressure is there – the knowledge of potential offence is there.

People that reject truth for popular, fashionable, trendy beliefs always put God’s men in a bind.

Isaiah 30

  • 9 That this [is] a rebellious people, lying children, children [that] will not hear the law of the LORD:
  • 10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:
  • 11 Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.
  • 12 Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:

III. It Corrupts the People of God

  • I Timothy 6:3-5  If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, [even] the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

Colossians 2

  • 6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, [so] walk ye in him:
  • 7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
  • 8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
