The Blessing of Blushing

Ezra 9:6 And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.

Introduction: We have as a society lost the ability to discourage bad behavior by attaching a stigma or shame. Sin is tolerated; shame is a thing of the past.

It is politically incorrect to say anything negative about a cross-dressing transvestite teaching little children how to twerk at the city library.

Blushing is a blessing…

I. If you still can

God made us to be able to blush when we’ve done something wrong.

Instead of getting angry with people for making you ashamed, get right with God!

  • Jeremiah 6:15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.

We live in a day and age when people are not content to live a lifestyle of sin.

They are marching in the streets; waving their flags and are PROUD of it.

  • I Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
  • Ephesians 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

Blushing is a blessing…

II. If it makes you get honest

Not too far gone.

Still hope. There’s still a space of grace (vs. 8)

Blushing is a blessing…

III. If it lets you get help

  • Ezra 10:1, 2 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore. And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
  • Psalms 34:18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
